Jumping the Broom and it's Origins

Season 1 Episode 12

Many cultures have rituals that are integrated into wedding ceremonies to celebrate their heritage and pass down customs to another generation. That being said, some of these rituals can have a convoluted origin story. Jumping the broom is one of those rituals.

So, what is jumping the broom? It’s a traditional act performed after the vows are exchanged, with the newlyweds holding hands and jumping over a broom to seal their union. This tradition is very heavily steeped in African American culture from the slavery era in the US. There are those that believe this custom originated in Ghana, and those that say it actually came from the Romani people of Wales. Let's dive into this and find out how and why it came to the US.
